International Affairs

The City of Tallahassee embraces globalization as one way to become more competitive, and endeavors to become a global community. One way to accomplish this goal is to promote the establishment of sister city programs in other countries. These relationships have the potential to promote cooperation and partnerships in health and medicine, education, cultural arts, sports and economic development, to name a few.

The city is a member of Sister Cities International, which provides a framework for the establishment of partnerships between international communities. Sister City relationships have been established with Sligo, Ireland (1995), Krasnodar, Russia (1989), St. Maarten, Dutch Antilles (1999), Ramat-Hasharon, Israel (2006), and Konongo-Odumasi, Ghana (2008). Local citizens' committees must be established for each sister city and are responsible for maintaining the relationship.

These partnerships and shared resources benefit our citizens by providing a way for Tallahassee to become an incubator for future educational, cultural, and economic programs, and offer opportunities for broadening citizens exposure to international cultures. Increasing foreign trade and promoting Tallahassee internationally is an important element of the City's future.
