Idle Free Program

In 2009, the City of Tallahassee adopted a Carbon Reduction Plan to reduce the community's greenhouse gas emissions. According to an analysis of the City's greenhouse gas inventory, emissions from mobile sources, such as personal and commercial vehicles, contribute close to 40 percent of Tallahassee's greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the Carbon Reduction Plan recommended the adoption of a city policy addressing the unnecessary idling of city-owned or leased vehicles and equipment and implementing an educational community campaign to raise awareness of the adverse impacts of idling. Subsequently, the City adopted the Municipal Anti-Idling and Fuel Conservation Policy to address the unnecessary idling of city vehicles and equipment. As a part of the Idle Free Community Campaign, the City has also developed and launched the Partnership for Idle Free Tallahassee-Leon with community stakeholders to provide educational programs and outreach activities targeting the reduction of unnecessary idling.

Help make a difference in our community. Make positive environmental decisions to avoid unnecessary idling. By avoiding unnecessary idling, you can reduce your greenhouse gas output, save money and energy, decrease engine wear-and-tear, and reduce your incidence of illnesses associated with poor air quality.
