H.A.R.T. (Heartworm Assistance Rehabilitation Training)
The canine HART program is a partnership between the Animal Service Center and Wakulla Correctional Institute (WCI) in Wakulla Florida. The program began on May 10, 2010 and aims to assist dogs undergoing canine heartworm disease treatment and recovery to increase their adoptability.
All Animal Service Center dogs participating in the HART program must be heartworm positive upon entry to the program. Each dog screened and selected for the program has received treatment for their otherwise deadly parasitic disease prior to being housed at WCI and rehabilitated and fostered through treatment. These dogs remain in the correctional institute for 3 months during their recovery while simultaneously receiving basic obedience training.
The HART adoption fee is $150.00. Services included in the adoption fee are: behavioral assessment, heartworm treatment, health assessment - to include heartworm testing, rabies vaccine, tag and certificate, other age appropriate vaccinations, sterilization surgery, AVID microchip, heartworm recovery, and obedience training.
The canine HART program seeks to increase adoptions by providing treatments for the center's most difficult adoption candidate - dogs infected with canine heartworm disease. There are many ways that you can help support and expand this unique program, and provide more treatments for dogs in dire need.
- Dog treats: semi-moist treats (any brand)
- Dog collars: All sizes, colors
- Bleach
- Vinegar
Donations may be dropped off at the Animal Service Center 1125 Easterwood Drive. Monetary contributions are also accepted:
- $500...will sponsor a dog through a 3 month session
- $200...will sponsor a dog through heartworm treatment
- $120...will purchase one DOC approved collapsible kennel
- $100...will sponsor the treats for one week of the program
- $20....will purchase one dog bed
- $10....will purchase 5 DOC approved leashes
- $5......will purchase one stainless steel food bowl
